Microsoft keeps a limit of 258 characters for the name of a ‘file or sub-folder path.’ If this limit is exceeded, you won't be able to delete, move, or rename the sub-folder/file. In such a situation, attempting to copy-paste or delete the file or sub-folder would give the following error:
The source file name(s) are larger than is supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name, or try renaming to shorter name(s) before attempting this operation.
YOU WILL BE STUCK WITH A FOLDER THAT CANNOT BE MANAGED OR DELETED. THIS FOLDER WILL KEEP ADDING SUBFOLDERS AND CAUSING YOU TO LOOSE RESOURCES.
HERE IS THE SOLUTION!
First off, you will find many answers to this problem online and most of them are wrong and some work but are a maze of instructions that take time and usually many tries to get the fix.
Here now the simple way to go.
ALL YOU NEED
1 - A SYSTEM THAT CAN BOOT
FROM A THUMBDRIVE
2 - THUMBDRIVE 32 GB
3 - YUMI THUMB DRIVE MULTIMBOOT FORMATTING SOFTWARE
4 - LINUX MINT DISTRO
3 AND 4 CAN BE FOUND FOR DL AT THE TOP OF THE SITE HERE, JUST UNDER THE TITLE AND LOGO LINE.
You will see Yumi
GO GRAB THE FILES
Once you have the software you will SETUP your thumb drive BY RUNNING YUMI. Then copy LINUX MINT ON TO IT.
YOU WILL SET YOUR PC TO BOOT FROM USB THUMB DRIVE.
with the thumb drive with Linux Mint on it.
when you are at the linux main desktop you are in control
LINUX MINT DISTRO
is a version that allows you to see how it works and it is fully functional. Everything you do while logged into it will be deleted when you log off. You can log in anytime again. You can carry Linux Mint around in your pocket!
There is an option on the desktop to actually do the full install. Unless you want to remove your current OS and install Linux mint, do not click on that option. I personally liked Linux Mint so much that I did install it on an older laptop.
It uses so much less resources and it is very much virus immune.
NOW THE FIX
LOOK AROUND LINUX DESKTOP AND YOU WILL SEE AN ICON TO GET TO YOUR COMPUTER'S OS FILES LISTS
I T SAYS COMPUTER.
CLICK AND GO TO THE FOLDER THAT YOU CANNOT DELETE FROM WINDOWS.
LINUX DOES NOT GIVE A DAMNED ABOUT THE 258 CHARACTER LIMIT TO NAMES, SO IT IS READY AND ABLE TO FIRE THE KILL SHOT AT THAT FOLDER.
Shut down PC, remove thumb drive and reset your pc to boot from the OS on your drive c:
Oh, and have fun with Linux. Keep that thumb drive handy for rebooting Linux again.
Did I mention that you can add other files on that drive also if you need to. You can also add other OS boot files on that thumb drive too!
If Microsoft kept the 258 character limit
in Windows 10, then this fix will work there
If you follow the above instructions, you will have this annoying problem solved.
