Thanks Mike
Feb 19 , 1945 , the 4th and 5th Marine Division landed
on the Japanese Island of Iwo Jima.
My Dad, PFc. Chuck Shockley hit the beach on Yellow 1 about 11:30 am. For the next month the 4th and 5th Divisions, later joined by the 3rd fought their way across the Island.
My Dad, started out in a heavy 82mm , mortar team, but within a short time his team was put into the line as rifleman, as losses were so heavy.
On this, the 75th Anniversary of the battle, we remember our fathers and their actions on Iwo, when Admiral Chester Nimitz said, “on Iwo, uncommon valor, was a common virtue”
